Prize Fighter

A first-person boxing game for the Sega CD that relies entirely on black-and-white full-motion video for its action.

Overview

Prize Fighter is a full motion video first-person boxing game developed by Digital Pictures and published by Sega for the Sega CD in 1993. It was later a pack-in game with the JVC X'Eye on September 1994.

Players control an upstart boxer known as "The Kid", as he fights through three opponents of increasing strength (George "Honeyboy" Hernandez, Mega Joe Falco, and T. Rex Hawkins) before taking on the champion: Nuke "The Duke" Johnson. The game is filmed entirely in black-and-white and features numerous cutscenes (some of which lampoons boxing films and culture). It also features Gene LeBell as the referee and Michael Buffer as the ring announcer.

The game's fight sequences use two sets of FMV video on top of each-other: one of which shows the player's arms. Requiring much trial-and-error, players must use careful timing and correct technique to dodge strikes, block attacks and land punches. Optionally, players can enable cues to help determine when to punch and which punch to throw. In-between fights, players earn Power Points to help them boost their attacking power and stamina.

Digital Pictures later used this style of FMV for the sports games Slam City with Scottie Pippen and Quarterback Attack with Mike Ditka, as well as the action game Supreme Warrior.
