Power Punch 2

A Punch-Out!! clone featuring a cast of alien boxing opponents released for the NES. Its history as a game that almost starred Mike Tyson is more interesting than the game itself.

Overview

Power Punch II is an NES boxing game in which the player takes the role of Mark Tyler, who enters a competition against a series of alien boxing opponents. An early version of the game was called Mike Tyson's Intergalactic Power Punch, and featured Tyson as the protagonist, but at some point, Tyson was dropped from the game. Subsequently, Tyson became Tyler, and flamboyant boxing promoter Don King was replaced with a generic fictional character.

For years, it was supposedly "confirmed" that the game was initially commissioned by Nintendo, but they pulled out from their side of the deal due to Tyson's rape allegations. However, there never was any apparent source on this information, and it was taken as legitimate by many publications without this evidence, and the timeline did not add up, with Nintendo choosing to not renew their license of Tyson's name and likeness in 1990 (this lapse in renewal was also rumored to be due to Tyson's actions, but that happened a year before his arrest). Furthermore, in 2022, the game's main programmer and character designer Andrew Bailey stated that he had no recollection of Nintendo commissioning the game.
