Overview

Muv-Luv Alternative is a science fiction visual novel developed by Age that serves as a direct sequel to Muv-Luv. Originally published for Windows computers in 2006 with both eroge and non-explicit versions, it later received ports for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita that were published by 5pb. Degica Games eventually released an English version of the "all-ages" edition of Muv-Luv Alternative, thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, for the PC on September 18, 2017. A "Director's Cut" patch was later made available on June 21, 2018 for an additional purchase, which added back the title's erotic content. The English version of Alternative was also released for the Vita by pQube in Europe and North America in June of 2018.

Story

Muv-Luv Alternative is a retelling of the events that occurred in Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited. As the erstwhile protagonist of the previous games, Takeru Shirogane, the player begins the game in the exact same way as Muv-Luv Unlimited started: Waking up in an alternate timeline where the human race is locked in a desperate battle against alien invaders. However, the Shirogane still retains his memories of the events that occurred in Muv-Luv Unlimited and sets himself to the task of changing what he knows will be humanity's doomed future.

Trivia

  • The creator of Attack on Titan, Hajime Isayama, has stated in interviews that Muv-Luv Alternative served as a major influence on the now hugely popular manga series. Isayama stated that, "Although I was watching manga and movies normally like anyone else, [Alternative] was the the first time I thought I could actually be killed by the creator of a work of fiction. Being impacted by such a malicious attitude, as if I too had been killed, I was driven by an impulse of wanting to launch something with a strong impact into society, or wanting to destroy something. I realized that impulse was what I wanted to do." [1]
  • Muv-Luv Alternative is infamous for its Engrish voice acting during the game's opening credits sequence where English speaking soldiers, being voiced by Japanese actors, are investigating a BETA stronghold. However, when Alternative was localized by Degica Games in 2017 the introduction was completely re-recorded by native English speakers with dialogue that was closer to the original Japanese subtitles. Some of the talent used in the re-recorded scene include George Ledoux, who is known for doing several character voices in MechWarrior 4 including fan favorite commentator: Duncan Fisher, and Amber Lee Connors, who voiced Beli Lapran in HuniePop as well as Ginger from Dust: An Elysian Tail.
