The Hobbit

A ground breaking text-adventure video game based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Overview:

The size and graphics of this game were impressive in its day, and it boasted a real time mechanic. Limitations were apparent from the outset, however; it didn't take long for the player to tire of an inevitably sedentary Thorin singing about gold.

The Hobbit did boast a more advanced language recognition ability than most text based input in games. Using a language simply called English (yes, really), The Hobbit could understand more complex sentences. The game also is an early example of what would eventually be called "emergent gameplay" since it allows the player to use the systems to create their own stories rather than stiffly follow the tried and true Hobbit tale.
