Though it was developed by the Turbine team (with Microsoft's extensive assistance), it was published as a Microsoft title until 2004. The game was set on the island continent of Dereth and several surrounding smaller islands and archipelagos on the fictional planet of Auberean. The game was played in a large, seamless 3D virtual world which could host thousands of players' characters at a time. Released on November 2, 1999, it was the third major MMORPG to be released and was developed at the same time as Ultima Online and Everquest. After initial success, its subscription numbers dropped as newer MMORPGs moved into the market. Its host servers remained online for over 17 years after the game's original launch.

They work as a collective to break buildings, eat people, and destroy cars and this creates competition among players. When a player (literally) unlocks George, Lizzie, or Ralph, then they become playable characters. Once all the monsters are rescued, aliens begin to invade the earth, leaving the monsters the only ones who can save the planet they just helped partially destroy. After fending off the invasion on Earth, the monsters rescue Myukus (a cyclops-like alien) from Area 51 before chasing the aliens through space, destroying the aliens' bases throughout the Solar System and eventually rampaging through their homeworld.

It uses three dimensional graphics that are viewed from a third person perspective with six different camera views. The game is mainly played by clicking with the mouse and a climb bar is used to determine the accuracy and energy use of a climb. With the third click the player has to stop the bar within the zone to complete the climb. Failing to hit the zone will lead to the player falling. The size of the zone depends on the difficulty of the climb. Three different items can be used during a climb: chalk which improves the grip, power bars that gives a boost of energy and biners that attaches a rope to a rock and thereby prevents the climber from falling all the way down. There are ten different climbing spots with different difficulty leve
