Crimson Room: Reverse's premise is that the player finds themselves trapped in a single room. Controlling a cursor that can click on items to search and investigate, it's up to the player to scan the environment for helpful objects and figure out how to use them. The ultimate goal is unlocking an exit door and earning freedom.
The Mystery of the Mary Celeste is a hidden object game with adventure elements. The objective is to collect all the items shown at the bottom, as a series of black-and-white images on porthole windows, and use them to solve puzzles. Some portions of the scenery bring up a close-up window showing another angle of the scene, usually containing some of the required objects. Clicking on certain objects and characters opens up a number of connected containers around them, and the player has to drag and drop the collected tools from the inventory portholes to these blue circles, to complete the scene and move to the next one.

In each level, the players uses a limited number of bombs, blasts, nukes or ropes to launch the gerbils beneath the level line. Additional points are awarded for using less resources than provided and for knocking down as many gerbils in a short amount of time. Gerbils in red blocks must never be touched.

The purpose of the Special Mission is to collect fifteen Bonus Credits (five each in Red, Yellow and Blue) hidden around the website, which reveal access codes that unlock desktop wallpapers.

Julia along with Adam Shadow are sent to find the thief and recover the treasures, before news of the theft reaches the public. Matt Forrest provides technical assistance during the mission. After many investigations around the world and putting together a digital map of Atlantis, it turns out that Carmen Sandiego had been intercepting ACME communications and planned this entire mission. Carmen Sandiego steals the map and heads to South America.
