Cydonia: Mars - The First Manned Mission

    1999

    Adventure
    PC (Microsoft Windows)
Earth is dying, you, the player must save it by succeeding in the colonization of Mars. This is an adventure game that looks a lot like Cryo's brand, meaning 3D pre-calculated graphisms, with smooth transition when moving from place to place, plus of course, the obligatory full-motion cut-scenes. The art is impeccably done and up to the standards of the release year (1998). Upon arriving on Mars, however, the landing module hits an unexpected force-field and crashes, and that's where the adventure begins. The first puzzles are quite easy; they consist of saving the module and the two other humans aboard from the shipwreck and the subsequent fire, all the necessary hints being given to you by one of your shipmates. However, after that point, puzzles are way more difficult, as they consist (at first at least) of exploring remains of an alien civilization, with thought processes "alien" to human players.
  • Night Café

    Night Café

    Adventure
Night Café is a GM-less tabletop roleplaying game for 5 players where you guide the actions of the patrons of a café like the one described by Vincent van Gogh in his painting. Players will have a main playbook representing one of the aspects of the setting, but will portray multiple characters including the patrons themselves. The setting elements, the patrons and the obstacles they struggle with are generated by the players over the course of play. Night Café is inspired by games of belonging outside belonging and the principles of Powered by the Apocalypse. To play you need this zine, a single six-sided die, some index cards or scrap paper, a good amount of coins or beads, a few pens or pencils, and a single paintbrush. This game touches on issues of mental illness, addiction, self-harm, and violence.

Hyper Crazy Climber, a PlayStation game based on Nichibutsu's cult classic Crazy Climber, melds the climbing play mechanic of its arcade ancestor with the trappings of Mario-era 2D adventure titles. At the beginning of the game, players choose one of three characters: a human boy or girl, or an insect-like climber. Each has different levels of climbing speed and endurance (which measures how many hits they can take from falling objects before losing their grip). The basic gameplay of climbing structures is the same, though Hyper Crazy Climber has numerous different settings, including an abandoned clock tower, a misty mountain, and even a giant beanstalk, all rendered with some excellent foreground and background graphics. All of these structures have convenient grids on them, analogous to the windows of the original Crazy Climber. Hyper Crazy Climber doesn't offer much of a chance to stop and drink in that nicely drawn scenery, though there are many new dangers, ranging from the original game's nuisance of peopl
