  • Magma Project Hacker

    1989

    Magma Project Hacker

    1989

    Role-playing (RPG)
    Family Computer Disk System
A Japanese RPG loosely adapted from the 1985 Activision PC game Hacker. The player character uses a robotic fighter to hunt for clues behind a global conspiracy. Magma Project Hacker is a sci-fi themed RPG and an adaptation of the 1985 PC/Amiga/Atari ST strategy game Hacker. As with the Famicom Disk System adaptation of Monty on the Run, a considerable number of liberties were taken with the game's themes practically transforming it into a completely different game. Ironically, the story more closely resembles another western PC game, Captive, with its plot. The player character witnesses a murder and is told to seek information on a shadowy organization known as the Magma Project by the dying victim. In order to effectively hunt for clues, the player character uses a device to activate a robot on the other side of the planet and employs the robot's various combat and exploration functions to track down the Magma Project.

The player must navigate around them (or use them to their advantage, in some cases) in order to achieve the best score.

Adian no Tsue ("Staff of Adian") is an educational action-adventure game that strongly resembles The Legend of Zelda, or at least its dungeon areas. However, a major difference is that in order to collect the game's chief currency - bells - the player must solve basic arithmetic puzzles. Each room of the game contains monsters the first time the player enters. After defeating them, the player can select any of the nearby doors to enter: Some lead to different areas, but others will simply reveal a bell for the player to collect. Before the player can take this bell, the game presents a sum and the player must slash at numbers on the walls to complete the correct answer, then hit an "OK" symbol to submit it: If the answer's correct, they collect the bell and move on. If the answer is incorrect, the door that contains the bell closes and more monsters flood the room. The player can visit a store and a hint section at any tim

  • The Monitor Puzzle Kineko: Kinetic Connection

    1986

The Monitor Puzzle Kineko: Kinetic Connection

    1986

    Puzzle
    Family Computer Disk System
An image puzzle game similar to a jigsaw puzzle, except the picture it creates is animated. It was published by Irem in Japan only for the Famicom Disk System. Kinetic Connection, which has a longer title of Monitor Puzzle Kineco: Kinetic Connection for its original FDS release, is a puzzle game in which the player has to assemble a picture from a number of pieces like a jigsaw. However, the image (and thus the smaller pieces of the image) is constantly moving as it loops through an animation: This makes putting the puzzle together even more complicated, though it's occasionally made easier by carefully watching how pieces interact with each other. The game was developed by Tamtex, a subsidiary of Irem that made computer games, and published by Irem in Japan. The game would be later ported to the MSX and C64 home computers, as well as on the Sega Game Gear. It was also followed a year later with a FDS-only sequel, Kineco II, which was only available via the Disk Writer service.
  • Ultraman Club: Chikyuu Dakkan Sakusen

    1988

    Ultraman Club: Chikyuu Dakkan Sakusen

    1988

    Role-playing (RPG)
    Family Computer Disk System
Bandai published this Ultraman-themed RPG for the Famicom Disk System in 1988. It was not released outside of Japan. Ultraman Club: Chikyuu Dakkan Sakusen ("Earth Protection Strategy" roughly) is a Bandai licensed game and the third Famicom Disk System game to be based on the Ultraman tokusatsu/kaiju TV show. The concept behind the "Ultraman Club" was to consolidate all the different variants of Ultraman from his many appearances in the different shows and have the player control a party of them. Unlike the two prior games, which were more action-oriented, this game is a turn-based RPG similar to Final Fantasy. Players could also select each scenario from the title screen, choosing to play them in whichever order they wished - this type of freeform non-linear RPG model would appear later in Dragon Quest IV, though of course it had been common practice in Capcom's Mega Man series long before Ultraman Club's release.

    Michael English Daibouken

    1987

    Puzzle
    Family Computer Disk System
Michael English Daibouken is an educational game where the character of Michael, an orange cat, teaches kittens the various letters in the English language as well as some English vocabulary. Michael has to catch floating letters in order to spell out English words, while avoiding the incorrect letters. The game has various different backdrops, including space. The character of Michael comes from the Japanese serial manga strip "What's Michael", created by Makoto Kobayashi which might be considered analogous to Garfield, due to them both being orange cats. It varies between observing goofy pet behavior to more abstract tales of fantasy with anthropomorphized versions of the animal characters.
