Overview
MegaMari is a side-scrolling platformer game heavily inspired by the classic Mega Man series. The game is developed by Twilight Frontier, which is also known as Tasogare Frontier, and was released in May 22, 2006. The game features Marisa and Alice, where they have to battle against a number of other characters from the Touhou cast. An unofficial fan-made english patch was released in May 11, 2009.
Story
It is known that Marisa Kirisame is a relentless thief, stealing items wherever she desires. Patchouli Knowledge, the librarian of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, is a common victim of her thievery. Patchouli could not take it enemy. She rebuilt her library to counter Marisa, as well as recruiting others to help her. Marisa, however, will stop at nothing to get all of the books that she deeply desires to obtain from Patchouli's library. And thus, the war begins.
Gameplay
The game takes elements from the Mega Man and the Touhou series, meaning that bullet hell dodging mechanics will be present with platforming. Upon starting the game, the player is given the choice of which stage they desire to challenge, each with its own end boss. Defeating a boss will make a boss drop an orb. Whoever picks it up will grant them their power, and the power obtained varies for its new owner. There are eight stages the player must complete before they can storm into Patchouli's library. There are six stages the player must traverse through within Patchouli's library, with them having a harder difficulty than the initial eight stages to challenge all of the skills the player has learned. In the third stage of Patchouli's library, only Marisa is playable, as the stage is a reference to another Twilight Frontier game, Super Marisa Land. Similarly, only Alice is playable on the fourth stage. The player must defeat all of the eight bosses from the start on the fifth stage before proceeding to defeat Patchouli.
Controls
The game heavily depends on two buttons. Pressing Z makes the player jump, while pressing X makes the player shoot. Since the game mimics the playstyle of the first two Mega Man games, press Z while down down on the directional pad will not let the player perform a slide. Pressing C will pause the game and bring up the weapons menu, allowing the player to use powers obtain from bosses and switch between characters.
