Aim for the door (a dot!) in each room. Water rises incessantly, filling the house; languish for too long and you'll drown. There are five floors in the building; played on difficulty setting A (advanced), after every four rooms you'll escape to the next floor and the water level will drop a bit, bestowing some much-needed breath-related respite. Playing on difficulty setting B (beginner), the water level resets on each screen.
Left and right does what you'd expect. When you're not submerged, the fire button will let you jump. When underwater, you'll start to run out of breath, so repeatedly hammer the fire button to swim up. In this version, on the first screen, Mogwai are jumping from the roof to get at hamburgers on the ground. You, as Billy, must catch them before the hit they ground. If you get them all, it is off to the next, faster, level. If you miss eight, then you go to a shooting screen.
On the shooting screen, gremlins are approaching from the distance. You must shoot them before they reach you. If one reaches you, you lose a life. After they are all dead, it is back to the first screen at a faster level. In later levels, puddles of water will divide the gremlins in two.
A different version of the same name was also released for the 5200, Commodore 64 and Apple II.
The Atari 2600 version of Phoenix keeps the core gameplay intact, however the graphics are noticeably reduced in fidelity. The music and the two player mode were also removed.
A considerably stripped down version of Commando, with a limited amount of enemies onscreen and generally simplified gameplay. The levels have been reduced to only four stages that loop twice, as opposed to the arcade game's eight levels. The arcade game made use of two fire buttons; as the 2600 only has a single fire button, the player has to press fire to shoot and hold to lob a grenade. Bob and the alien fire flies is my very first game ever, for any platform anywhere. The inspiration for the game's main character came from a pancake I made once (it really did look like a hedgehog with tentacles). The game written entirely in bAtari BASIC features 3 different game over animations and two hedgehogs. Yes, that's right, you can play alone as Bob or play in two player mode with a friend and control both Bob and Hog as they battle to be the first to eat 20 fire flies.
