In this light, the popular five-member idol group Milky Dolls (yes, Milky Dolls) comes to a colony planet to perform a concert -- only to be captured by a fleet of Zentradi. Your mission is to fight through this massive armada of ships, pods, and fighters to save the idol singers. The opening sequence is storyboarded by Kawamori Shouji and accompanied by Fire Bomber's "Fly Away." The game itself is divided into nine missions, beginning with one in which you pilot a VF-1 Valkyrie against a VF-4 Lightning III as training and culminating with a final protracted duel with the de rigueur "boss" -- a transforming Zentradi fighter. Lord Monarch Online was released as freeware over the internet. It’s basically the same as the other versions but features totally new maps. Despite the “online” in the title, there is no network multiplayer. A fanmade map editor was created for the previous Windows versions, and this version can play those maps. This is also the only version of Lord Monarch translated into English, which also included an extensive online manual. Since there’s no real story in any of the computer versions, the only thing you need to know are the menu commands. Therefore, you can practice on the English version, and then use that knowledge if you want to play the other Japanese versions.

The North American version, which is only available as part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles and Final Fantasy Anthology compilations, came with a brand new English localization. Although certain translated lines from the previous localization by Kaoru Moriyama, such as "You spoony bard!", were kept, as they had become fan favorites.
