The game consists of nine missions with varied objectives. These range from shooting down enemy planes to taking out tanks and ships or radar installations. In a courier mission, documents must be delivered by landing on a certain airfield. Upon successfully completing a mission, a password is given. The action is seen from behind the Blue Lightning. With the heavy arcade focus, there is no danger of stalling or even crashing into the ground. Crashing into air or ground targets is possible, however. The Blue Lightning is armed with a cannon with unlimited ammunition and 40 missiles. The on-board computer automatically seeks missile lock for enemy targets while the cannon must of course be aimed manually. They then choose one of five levels, including a practice level. The objective in each level is to reach the concealed 'command centre' and demolish it. All X-Men share similar abilities, allowing movement in any direction, jumping, and attacking. Half of the characters (Storm, Iceman, Cyclops) possess long-range attacks, while the other half (Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus) need to engage enemies in close combat. Each X-Man can endure a specific number of hits before being defeated. If both X-Men fall in battle, players can select two more to attempt the level again until all X-Men are used. He can use a Shinto stick to change into characters/animals like a hippopotamus, a monkey or a tiger, each of which has its own special ability. The hippopotamus is slow and cannot jump very high, but can punch through special destructible blocks in the game world. The monkey can jump higher than the other creatures and the tiger can run faster. Psycho also has an ally named Birdfly, who can be used as armor or as a boomerang. The player assumes control of three separate ships operated by three separate pilots: Alpha Ship is piloted by Yugo Tyrone, Beta Ship is piloted by Belle Vogato, and Gamma Ship is piloted by Kenny Crawford (although none of the pilots' names is mentioned in the game).
