Play is controlled with a joystick or arrow keys and an action button. One of the four cardinal directions is used to choose the pitch, and again to aim it towards low, high, inside (towards batter), or outside (away from batter). The same directions are used to aim the swing when batting. When fielding after a hit, the defensive player closest to the ball will flash to show it is the one currently under control. The four directions are then used to throw to one of the four bases. The game incorporates a pitcher perspective, often used in MLB broadcasts. There are also managerial options available. The player has a selection of pitchers to choose from. Each team member has his own statistics that affect his performance, and can be rearranged as desired. Prior to HardBall!s release, there were managerial baseball games available, such as Micro League Baseball but HardBall! was the first to integrate that aspect with the arcade control of the game action itself.

Hidden Sounds A programmer of this game hid inside the ROM a separate series of sound effects which apparently the management did not like and forced him to change. In protest, the programmer left the following message to ROM hackers inside the code teaching them how to enable the other sounds effects. You RETARDS say one thing, then something else later all the time. You're a sound company; quit ignoring pachinko sounds and trying to put these weird sounds in instead! Do you WANT it ti be this hard to hear the balls?! I've left the PREVIOUS sounds, so edit this if you want to hear it. Set hex address AFFC to 1FAF and AFC4 to E0EE to

In the future (the year 2010 in the game) there are no longer wars in the world, disputes are settled with a game of Rocket Ball. Each team consists of five players on skates and a ball is shot into an arena from right to left and the idea is to pick the ball up and shoot it into an opening in the wall on the right. If the ball touches the left wall then the game is restarted and the ball fired into the arena again. Each match lasts 10 mins and the team with the most goals win. The ball can only be picked up and if touched knocks the player off his feet and the player with the ball can be tackled by the opposition players. Rocket Ball is viewed from the side at an elevated angle with part of the length of the arena shown and will scroll right to left with the position of the ball. One or two players can play and have the choice of four teams. If playing the computer you can select from one of six skill levels. Players can only go left and can't move to the right but can speed up or slow down. Moving the player is

Six tough events await in this joystick-waggling successor to Track &Field. The full sequence of events is - swimming, skeet shooting, gymnastics, archery, triple jumping and weightlifting. You must complete each event in order to be allowed onto the next one. Swimming involves moving left and right as fast as possible, while pressing fire when a breath is required. Skeet shooting and archery both come down to timing - though elevation and wind factors affect the latter. Gymnastics involves timing a succession of presses to ensure that the jump is long and the landing graceful. The triple jump involves one press for each part of the jump, whereas the weightlifting involves merely brute strength. If the player wants to go to the next event or round, they will have to qualify by beating increasingly difficult maximum times or minimum targets.
