    Choujikuu Yousai Macross: Skull Leader

    1994

    Strategy Turn-based strategy (TBS)
    PC-9800 Series
Chō Jikū Yōsai Macross: Skull Leader is based on the anime series Macross, narrating its initial chapters and focusing on one of its primary characters, Hikaru Ichijyo. Like Remember Me, it is a turn-based strategy game; however, it cannot be considered a sequel, since it does not continue the story and has many gameplay-related differences. The battles take place on an isometric screen. Instead of deploying individual space ships and mechs, as it was the case in Remember Me, the player positions human commanders, each controlling several of the aforementioned craft. The player can change formations in order to gain advantage in battle. Commanders are navigated on the screen in turn-based fashion. When an enemy is in range, the player has to choose an attack technique to employ against him. The ensuing battle is then displayed on a separate screen, proceeding automatically.

    Hiouden

    1992

    Role-playing (RPG)
    PC-9800 Series
Hiōden is a strategy game with RPG elements. The player navigates several teams of characters, mostly monsters (up to six in each team) through isometric environments. Sometimes cooperation between different player-controlled teams is required to advance. The game plays in real time, i.e. enemy parties also move and perform actions without waiting for player's input. The RPG angle is present in form of character levels - characters grow stronger after defeating enemies. It is possible to put the teams on "auto-mode", having some of them move and perform actions on their own. The game has a mouse-driven interface with a somewhat unusual feature for its time: windows. The movement field of different teams, character statistics, overview map, team management screen - everything has its own window. It is possible to enlarge any window to full screen, close it, open several small windows at the same time, and drag windows to arrange them on the screen in any way.

46 Okunen Monogatari: The Shinka Ron

    1990

    Puzzle Role-playing (RPG)
    PC-9800 Series
46 Okunen Monogatari: The Shinka Ron (fan translated as E.V.O.: The Theory of Evolution) is an RPG, about one step more primitive than the Dragon Quest games published by the same company. You control one character as they progress through the different eras of life on planet Earth, fighting turn-based battles with damage being based on stats that you control directly. Once you’ve pushed a stat to its uppermost limit, your character evolves into a completely different creature with different abilities in battle. The story itself is somewhat similar to Search for Eden, but much more fleshed out with a lot of different stories for each era that the game explores. And while Search for Eden ends with humanity as the pinnacle of evolution, The Theory of Evolution goes a bit further into the future…
