  • Desert

    Desert

    1982

    Simulator
    DOS
It ain't easy being a cameleer: not only do you have to survive a 40-mile trek across the Gobi desert, with only one camel and a quart of water -- you and your trusty humped steed have managed (somehow) to anger a tribe of knocked-kneed pygmies, who are now hot on your heels. All in all, you seem to be in a bit of a pickle. Your canteen is good for six drinks of water, unless you find a way to refill it. On each turn, you choose a course of action: have a drink; forge ahead moderately, or at full speed (which works your camel harder); rest for the night; check your status; or give it up and hope for help. You'll have to watch your water supply, your camel's health, and your distance from the pursuing pygmies. To top it off, the wasteland is full of surprises: some are good (like the occasional oasis), others not so much (sandstorms and roving bands of nomads, who may try to capture you for ransom).

    Protector II

    1982

    Shooter Arcade
Atari 8-bit Commodore C64/128/MAX TRS-80 Color Computer Texas Instruments TI-99
An arcade style game with a loose basis on the arcade hit Defender, Protector II is a side-scrolling shooter. Like Defender, there are lots of different aliens to contend with, and some ground based enemies as well. There are no smart bombs, however. You have to rescue humans as well (twice) from both an alien ship, and later a city that will be overrun with lava from a volcano that erupts during the game; all the while protecting them from aliens. You then have to drop them one at a time (unlike Defender, you can only carry one human at a time) into a teleporter tube to get them off the planet entirely. The game is quite difficult, with some very precise flying required at times (probably even more difficult than Defender or Stargate). It also has more of a "plot" than the arcade games it is based on, with several sub-missions of rescue depending on what stage you are at (it should be noted that there is no breaks between "stages" - the whole game play is continuous).

    Texas Instruments TI-99
Parsec is a computer game for the Texas Instruments TI-99/4A. Perhaps the best-remembered of all TI-99/4A games, it is a side-scrolling shooter, programmed in 1982 by Jim Dramis (who also programmed the popular TI-99/4A games Car Wars and Munch Man) and Paul Urbanus. The player in Parsec pilots a spaceship through sixteen differently-colored levels of play which scroll horizontally over the screen. The objective is to avoid being shot by an enemy ship, colliding with any flying object and/or the ground, and destroy all enemy ships without overheating one's laser cannon. Three waves of fighters attack, alternating with three waves of cruisers. Enemy ships enter the screen one at a time. A ship flying off the left edge of the screen wraps around to the right side and attacks again. A new fighter can appear with others still on the screen, whereas a new cruiser will not come until the previous one is destroyed. The fighters pose only the threat of collision, while the cruisers fire on the player's ship. The fighter

Your space ship is wihtin a nuclear reactor. At the center is the core whose walls are deadly for you if you touch them. Over time, the core starts to melt down and in the process starts to expand which leaves you less space to navigate. You share the precious space in the reactor with some particles which are not only attracted to your ship but will also try to bump you into the deadly walls of the core. You in turn try to do the same to them. In order to prevent the core to melt down the player has to bump all the particles into the deadly walls of the core. If the core has already expanded due to meltdown the player can try to bump the particles into two sets of four rods in order to reverse the process of melting down. After eliminating one set of rods the core will shrink back to its original size. To make matters easier the player can utilize decoys which will attract the particles. In doing so the player can maneuver the particles in an advantageous position for bumping them into the deadly core wall or into
