    Ballz: The Director's Cut is an improved version of the Genesis and SNES game Ballz 3D: Fighting at its Ballziest. Like the original, it's a 3D fighting game where all the characters are made out of balls. Each character has its own moves animations and combos. This game doubles as a storybook and a game, with mini-games found on each page. In Parachute Letters, players must match the letter with the one Mother Goose is carrying, In ABC Land, you must match multiple different letters in a row. In Conveyor Belt Words, you must complete the word given by finding the correct letter on the convener belt. In Robot Designer, you can create a unique robot by using different parts, and it will even dance for the player. On Cake Island, you must arrange fallen gumdrops in alphabetical order. On the Sunken Letter Ship, you must match the capital letter with its lowercase form. Finally, you are able to make your own story on the last page of the book. There is also a butterfly coloring book on the 2nd page. Some activities have several levels of difficulty, and the game primarily teaches alphabet and reading skills.

    There is a story mode, a painting mode, and midway-style games. Story mode comes in interactive mode (with passwords) or as a short movie that can be watched in less than an hour. Although the game is directed towards children, literacy in both Japanese and English is required in order to properly enjoy the story mode and to fully understand the rules. The three arcade games present in the game include painting the roses red, whacking characters from the story, matching creatures like in the card game Concentration. The painting mode can be likened to an extremely simplified version of Mario Paint. There is only one eraser tool and paintings cannot be saved into memory or printed on a printer. Only 16 colors can be used on canvases that feature the film's characters; the full 256-color spectrum is reserved for the blank canvas.
